Preliminary figures released by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) indicated that the deforestation process in the “Amazon” slowed down in Brazil, for the first time in four years.
The Brazilian Ministry of Environment and climate change reported on Thursday evening, citing Institute figures that in the period from August 2022 to July 2023, an area of about nine thousand square kilometers of forest was lost.
It is almost the same area as the territory of the island of Cyprus and with a decrease of 22.1% compared to the same period of the previous year, when an area of about 11,600 square kilometers of forest was lost, which is also the lowest figure since 2019.
The Amazon rainforest, a reservoir of carbon dioxide and has an important function in the international fight against climate change. Brazil owns a large part of the Amazon, which is equivalent to the area of Western Europe, stretching across nine countries.
