According to data from the Central Bank of Brazil, which was republished by the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur) on Monday, February 5th, foreign tourists spent a total of $6.9 billion in Brazil in the year 2023.
According to Embratur, the goal for the year 2023, as stated in the National Tourism Plan, was to achieve a growth of 8.58%, but the increase was 40.8% compared to the year 2022, where tourists spent $4.9 billion in Brazil.
According to the President of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo (pictured above), the result of last year is a reflection of the efforts made by the government to promote and present Brazil to the world.
“President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva always emphasizes that Brazil is a home to democracy, human diversity, sustainability, and mutual respect. The world has understood this message and has embraced our country.
We are very proud to be part of this history and to be able to make tourism generate employment opportunities, income, and improve the lives of Brazilians.”
Embratur also stated that the increase in the number of tourists is also attributed to the growth of international trips in Brazil, reaching 46.2 thousand trips in 2022.
However, according to Embratur data, the number of seats is still lower than that recorded in 2019. In that year, 14.5 million seats were provided. In 2023, there were 12.9 million seats, and in 2022, there were 9.7 million seats.
The sector’s goal, according to the National Tourism Plan approved by the National Tourism Council in January, is for the country to receive $8.1 billion from foreign tourists by 2027.
