A groundbreaking agreement has been reached by leading technology companies to voluntarily adopt “reasonable precautionary measures” to prevent the use of artificial intelligence tools in undermining democratic elections worldwide, especially with the approaching U.S. elections.
Tech executives from Adobe, Amazon, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and TikTok came together at the Munich Security Conference to announce a new voluntary framework on how to respond to images and videos crafted with AI that deliberately deceive voters.
The agreement, while largely symbolic, aims to address highly realistic images, voices, and videos produced by AI “faking the appearance, voice, or actions of political candidates and election officials or any other relevant parties in democratic elections, or providing false information to voters about when, where, and how to vote.”
It is important to note that the companies will not commit to banning or removing sophisticated deepfake materials.
This move marks a significant step towards safeguarding the integrity of democratic processes against AI manipulation tactics as the world braces for the upcoming elections.
