Petrobras revealed it will start testing a new project, the Hisep Project, within the next four years.
This technology will extract carbon dioxide from oil fields and inject it back underground, but unlike traditional methods, this process will occur on the seabed instead of on the platform.
Currently, Petrobras is already re-injecting some of the CO2 underground.
The new plan aims to increase the amount that is re-injected by using underwater equipment to liquefy the CO2, which raises the pressure and allows for it to be re-injected into the ground in order to prevent it from being released into the atmosphere.
The initial stage of the project will be carried out in the pre-salt Mero field, located in the Santos basin.
Following lab tests, Petrobras will coordinate the installation of underwater machinery to extract and reinject the gas.
The total cost from the beginning of the study in 2014 until the start of the pilot phase in mid-2028 is estimated to be $1.7 billion.
The release of CO2 into the atmosphere is a byproduct of extracting oil from underground reservoirs.
