Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that Mexico is considering imposing import taxes on Chinese-made shoes due to their spread in the country.
“Mexico’s Minister of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, is considering implementing import duties,” López Obrador said in a conference.
“I asked Buenrostro to analyze the situation carefully because a balance had to be struck between reasonable shoe prices and the protection of local production,” he added.
The Mexican president did not specify whether the import tariffs could apply specifically to shoes made in China, the world’s largest shoe manufacturer, or to the materials used to make the shoes.
Shoemakers in the central state of Guanajuato have in recent days been asking for government support because of the blow they have taken from low-cost shoes from China that have flooded the market.
