According to the news website “infopay”, Argentina and Brazil have jointly submitted a request for financial assistance worth 12.5 billion euros (13.2 billion dollars) from the European Union.
The submission of the application comes in the context of talks to conclude a trade agreement between the Union and the South American economic bloc “Mercosur”, which, along with Argentina and Brazil, includes Uruguay and Paraguay.
The website quoted 3 diplomats from the European Union and South America as saying that the request has the support of the economic bloc, of which Brazil currently holds the rotating presidency.
The website pointed to a European statement confirming that the Union will allocate financial resources in the amount of at least 12.5 billion euros in the form of subsidies, loans and other financial instruments, in response to the request of Argentina and Brazil.
However, a European diplomat involved in the talks explained that the figure of 12.5 billion euros is “floating”, noting that any support that can be provided in the future “will not be close to this figure”.
