Argentine president Javier Mele informed the leaders of the “BRICS” countries that Buenos Aires will not join the group at the beginning of 2024, in compliance with what the liberal president pledged in his election campaign.
In a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and other members of the BRICS (Russia, India, China, South Africa), Milley considered that “Argentina’s accession to the BRICS group as a full member country from the beginning of January 2024 is not appropriate”.
The president, who took office on December 10, stressed that the foreign policy of his government “differs in many ways from the policy of the previous government”.
“In this context, some of the decisions taken by the previous government, including the establishment of a body to deal with the country’s participation in BRICS, will be reviewed,”he added.
The last BRICS Summit, held in August in Johannesburg, saw the issuance of invitations to six countries-Argentina, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates-to join the group from early January 2024.
During his election campaign, Milley reiterated his rejection of his country’s accession to the BRICS, and supported his desire to “support any agreements with the communists because they do not respect the basics of Free Trade, Freedom and democracy”.
A spokesman for the Argentine Presidency said that the letters to the BRICS member states indicate that”we are conducting a process of foreign policy change based on more in-depth analyses than conducted by the previous government.
