Argentina has begun the bidding process for the reversal of a pipeline that has previously been used to import gas from neighboring Bolivia in order to supply the country’s northern districts with Vaca Muerta production.
Gas from Vaca Muerta would be used to power homes in Córdoba, Tucumán, La Rioja, Catamarca, Santiago del Estero, Salta, and Jujuy, as well as to generate energy for thermal power plants and other businesses.
Argentina might possibly send natural gas to northern Chile, central Brazil, and Bolivia.
“We are promoting Argentine jobs, ensuring energy supply, and lowering costs,” Economy Minister and presidential contender Sergio Massa stated in Córdoba.
The project will require a $710 million investment, of which 540 million will be financed with a loan from the CAF (the Development Bank of Latin America).
The plan is expected to produce 3,000 direct jobs and 12,000 indirect jobs by mid-2024.
The North Gas Pipeline will be extended by 62 kilometers, the gas injection direction in four existing compressor units will be reversed, and a 122-kilometer gas pipeline in the province of Córdoba will be built.
