Argentine President Javier Milei delivered a resolute message at the Expoagro 2024 rural event in San Nicolás, Buenos Aires, emphasizing a commitment to fiscal responsibility and tax reduction. He stated that
“by improving the fiscal numbers, the door would be opened for us to start lowering taxes,” contrasting his approach with past governments that inflated public spending. Instead, Milei advocated for redirecting funds to entrepreneurs and citizens rather than politicians.
Highlighting significant cuts in state expenditures, Milei expressed optimism about freeing up the exchange rate between the Argentine peso and the US dollar by mid-2024. He underscored the vital role of rural production in the nation’s economy and projected February’s inflation rate to be around 15%.
This speech marked Milei’s first public appearance since addressing the Legislative Assembly on March 1, where he urged all governors to support the May Pact, facilitating the passage of Libertarian agenda laws in Congress. Milei acknowledged confronting entrenched corruption within his administration, noting dismissals of 50,000 civil servants, reductions in public works, and reforms within the Central Bank, yielding a surplus in January.
Celebrating positive economic indicators, Milei cited declining country risk and the disappearance of the exchange rate gap between official and black market quotations.
