Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva raised the possibility of failure of talks on a free trade agreement between Europe and South America, shortly before the consultations between the German and Brazilian governments, indirectly blaming Europe.
Lula said at the UN climate change conference (cop28) held in Dubai, that if an agreement cannot be reached, no one should say that Brazil or South America is to blame.
The Brazilian president continued:”If there is no agreement, be patient . Not because of a lack of desire. The only thing that should be clear is that they can no longer say that it is because of Brazil. And they can no longer say that it’s because of South America,”he said.
These statements came in response to a speech by French President Emmanuel Macron at the cop28 summit, in which he announced his opposition to the agreement.
“I cannot ask our farmers and industry in France, but also everywhere in Europe, to make efforts to implement new decarbonization rules … Then I suddenly say, that I will cancel all customs duties to allow the entry of products to which these rules do not apply,”he said.
Lula explained that the reason is simply that the rich countries do not want to make any concessions.
