Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrived in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, on Wednesday (14th) for a two-day trip.
The official agenda commences on Thursday (15th) with a meeting between Lula and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the signing of bilateral agreements, and a press release. Lula will also pay a visit to the Arab League headquarters.
President Lula’s visit to the continent will encompass various important subjects, such as battling inequality and hunger, transitioning to renewable energy and addressing climate change, reforming international institutions, and promoting trade between Brazil and African nations. Additionally, his itinerary includes a visit to Ethiopia.
The journey to Cairo commemorates the centenary of the diplomatic ties between Brazil and Egypt. Egypt is presently Brazil’s second biggest trade ally in Africa, with Algeria being the only one ahead.
By 2023, the trading relationship between Egypt and Brazil resulted in a total bilateral trade of US$ 2.8 billion. Out of this amount, Brazil imported Egyptian products worth US$ 489 million, while Brazil exported its own products to Egypt for a total value of US$ 1.83 billion.
The Brazilian government is anticipating a growth in trade between the two countries in the upcoming years, after the Egyptian market started accepting various Brazilian products like fish and its byproducts, poultry meat, cotton, bananas, gelatin, and collagen in 2023.
The government of the African country plans to give approval for new beef slaughterhouses and refrigeration facilities in Brazil for exporting purposes in the near future. They will also hold discussions regarding the establishment of an air route between Sao Paulo and Cairo, connecting the two countries.
President Lula of Brazil will be leaving for Ethiopia on Thursday to attend the African Union Summit as a guest. The summit, which will take place on the 16th and 17th, will also be attended by the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas. Bilateral meetings between the Brazilian delegation and other participants are also scheduled.
