Brazil’s retail sales fell in May, data from the statistics agency IBGE showed, with half of the sectors reporting a decline for the month.
Sales decreased by 1.0% in May compared to the previous month. The index fell 1.0% year-on-year in the month, below an expected rise of 1.95%, marking its first decline in nine months.
“The monthly drop in sales came on the back of four positive results for the eight sectors surveyed,” the statistics agency IBGE said.
The agency highlighted that the main index has jumped 1.3% so far this year.
