In the year 2023, Brazil received a total of 5.9 million foreign tourists, which is an increase of 62.7% compared to the year 2022, which saw the reception of 3.6 million tourists. According to the data published on Thursday, January 18th by the Ministry of Tourism, the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur), and the Brazilian Federal Police, the total number of tourists recorded in 2023 exceeded the expectations of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) by 3%, but it is still low compared to the pre-pandemic period, where Brazil received a total of 6.3 million tourists in 2019.
On the other hand, international tourism revenues in Brazil have increased compared to the revenues recorded before the pandemic until November. The published data confirms that Brazil’s revenues from foreign tourism between January and November amounted to 31 billion Brazilian reals, a value that exceeds what was recorded in the years before the pandemic.
Marcelo Frenzho, the President of the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion, emphasized in this statement that the success witnessed in 2023 can be attributed to the adoption of measures by the sector to promote Brazil, expand interest in the country, and attract international flights. Marcelo states, “We have worked tirelessly in all areas to witness the launch of new air travel routes, employing advertising strategies and creating partnerships with Brazilian and foreign companies, putting our tourist destinations on the international stage.”
The Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, stated that the tourism sector is close to reaching or even surpassing the number of foreign tourists before the pandemic, emphasizing the importance of increasing the average ticket price and the total foreign tourist expenditure in Brazil.
Among the main countries that sent the largest number of tourists to Brazil in 2023 were Argentina with 32% of the total tourists, followed by the United States, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, France, Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy. As for the Brazilian states that saw the largest number of foreign visitors, they were Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, and Santa Catarina, where the main means of entry into the country was by air with a total of 3.7 million visitors, followed by land which saw the entry of 1.9 million visitors to Brazil.
