The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced the completion of the fuel loading process at the reactor of the fourth Barakah nuclear power plant, in accordance with the requirements of local regulations and international standards.
She pointed out that this was after the issuance of the operating license for the fourth plant of the operating arm of the institution, Nawah Energy Company, by the federal authority for Nuclear Regulation.
She stressed that the step is important towards the full operation of the four Barakah plants, which are the largest single source of clean electricity in the region.
The three plants in Barakah, which have been operated commercially for three years, produce more than 30 terawatt-hours of zero-carbon electricity throughout the year, according to the Emirates news agency “WAM”.
Once the fourth plant is commercially operational, it will increase the total clean electricity production capacity of the Barakah plants to 5.6 GW, providing more than 40 terawatts of clean electricity to the UAE electricity grid every year.
The volume of production is equivalent to about 25 percent of the country’s electricity needs, along with the reduction of millions of tons of carbon emissions, the main cause of the phenomenon of climate change.
The operating teams at the Barakah plants will carry out a comprehensive program of tests before the start of operation of the reactor of the fourth plant.
With the start of the fourth plant in 2024 as planned, ENEC’s strategy focuses on enhancing the country’s investments in the nuclear energy sector, working closely with key global partners and technology companies to explore and select the right technology and meet the growing demand for clean electricity.
