The International Monetary Fund (IMF) contacted the right-wing candidate for the Presidency of Argentina, Javier Milei, to address the issue of the $44 Billion of debt that the South American country must pay.
“First contact was maintained with the winner of the primary, open, simultaneous, and mandatory elections (PASO) of August 13 for 30% of the votes and the candidate for president for the Freedom Advances party to schedule a meeting in the coming days,” IMF officials told “Sputnik.”
“There was an initial contact to coordinate a meeting,” sources from the IMF confirmed.
The International Monetary Fund explained that it regularly seeks contact with candidates who aspire to the presidency of countries with which it has a relationship since they allow its technical staff to understand “better the key aspects of possible future economic policies.”
The IMF supported the Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina’s (BCRA) decision to weaken the national currency by 22% following the primary elections last Sunday.
Javier Milei, the main favorite for the general elections to be held in Argentina on October 22, confirmed in the last few hours that the IMF had contacted him with the purpose of holding a meeting.
“They contacted my sister to have a meeting; we are looking at how to deal with it,” he said in a radio interview.
“What is the key to all the Fund’s programs? Lower the deficit. And why does it always fail? because it is not fulfilled. We have a much more aggressive fiscal program than the Fund; we would be overaccomplished in the goal because we have that conviction,” he said in the radio interview.
