A month after the devastating earthquake in Morocco, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank today held their annual meetings in the country.
The annual event, held in the western city of Marrakech, is attended by Finance Ministers, representatives from the financial sector, development experts and central banks.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stressed before the meetings that the fund plays an important role in bringing countries together. This also means strengthening the voice of emerging and developing countries, ” she said. The consultations will last until next Sunday and will address, among other things, the looming debt crisis in low-income countries, climate change, high inflation and the fight against poverty.
On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund will present new forecasts for the development of the global economy. Georgia has already said that the IMF expects weak economic growth in the medium term.
In early September, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter Scale struck Morocco, leaving almost three thousand dead, according to local authorities.
It was unclear after the earthquake whether the annual meeting of the IMF and the World Bank will be held in Morocco as planned. In the end, the two institutions said that the event should be held. “We believe that the annual meetings provide an opportunity for the international community to support Morocco and its people at this difficult time,”they said in a statement.
