Meta Platforms announced on Monday that it will offer people in the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland the ability to pay a monthly subscription to access Facebook and Instagram without any ads.
Meta said that users will be able to purchase the subscription from November. The company is taking a step to comply with “sophisticated”European regulations. An ad-free subscription will cost 9.99 euros per month on the web or 12.99 euros per month on iOS and Android.
The high price of the iOS and Android operating systems takes into account the fees charged by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:Google) through their respective purchase policies, according to Meta.
Until March 1, 2024, the initial subscription price will cover all linked accounts. However, they said that after that date, an additional fee of EUR 6 per month on the web and EUR 8 per month on iOS and Android operating systems will be applied to each additional account listed in the user account Center.
“The option for people to purchase an ad-free subscription balances the requirements of European regulators while giving users freedom of choice and allowing Meta to continue serving all people in the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland,”Meta said.
