The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López, announced that the Maya Train has already been formally handed over to the Ministry of Defense (Sedena).
“There is already a decree. The delivery of the company managed by Fonatur, the Maya Train, for the construction of the 1,554 kilometers of tracks, the acquisition of trains, stations, garages, everything that is the Maya Train was formalized,” he said at his morning press conference.
Subsequently, the Mexican president delved into the fact that this project is made up in an integral way in order to provide passenger and cargo transport as well as improve the economy of southeastern Mexico.
“We must not forget that, for 40 years, the southeast was abandoned.” There was only economic growth at the tip of the peninsula, in Cancun. Everything else had no chance of receiving public investment,” he added.
The Mexican president pointed out that the reason Sedena will manage this work is to protect Mexico’s heritage.
“This work, like others, is being financed with public investment. It’s not debt. They are not such public-private partnership mechanisms. No, it is the public budget, the people’s money, that is being invested. They are works of the nation, works of the people, and we want to take care of them. What the corrupt neoliberals did, that what was done with money from all Mexicans was transferred to individuals, will not happen,” he said.
