US billionaire Elon Musk said he will visit the US-Mexico border in Texas this week to face the “serious issue” of border security.
Musk responded to a video shared by Fox News channel showing migrants riding on top of a freight train bound for the United States.
“I spoke with Republican Representative Tony Gonzalez tonight and he confirmed that it is a serious problem,”Musk said late on Monday on the social media platform X, which he owns.
“They have been overwhelmed by unprecedented numbers, they have just reached their all-time high and are still rising!”I will be visiting Eagle Pass later this week to see for myself what is happening,”he continued.
The city of Eagle Pass, Texas, declared a state of emergency last week due to what it described as a”severe influx of migrants to the city located on the southern border”.
The flow of migrants at the border increased by almost 27% last month, according to the Customs and Border Protection Agency, as US officials encountered 232,972 people entering the country without a permit through the southwestern border in August.
Border security has been a key focus for Republicans in the 2024 election cycle. Gonzalez’s office confirmed that he spoke with Musk on Monday and the congressman relayed what he saw during his visit to Eagle Pass earlier that day.
