Alexander Shchetinin, director of the Latin America Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that the main task of Russia’s chairmanship of the BRICS summit in 2024 will be to determine the form of participation of new member states and those interested in joining the group.
On the sidelines of the Russia-Latin America conference, Shchetinin added that the work will now be directed towards the work of a new expanded formula on the BRICS, on which the form of participation of the new member states will be decided, in what way they will cooperate with the BRICS, etc.,” pointing out that this will be one of the main tasks of Russia during its presidency of the BRICS summit for 2024.
The BRICS summit was held in Johannesburg under the chairmanship of South Africa from August 22 to 24.
At the summit, the member states reached an agreement on the accession of Argentina, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia, full members of the group from January 1, 2024.
The first inter-parliamentary conference between Russia and Latin America is being held in Moscow from September 19 to October 2 at the initiative of the Russian State Duma.
