Government officials stressed that the UAE is consolidating its global position in promoting the transition towards renewable and clean energy. They said in statements on the occasion of the “World Energy Day” Initiative adopted by representatives of 54 countries, in addition to the United Nations, the league of Arab states, and the African Union Commission, that the celebration of World Energy Day, which was adopted during the World Energy Forum 2012 in Dubai, acquires special importance during the “year of sustainability”, during which the UAE will host the twenty-eighth session of the conference of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change (COP28) at Expo Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Supreme Council of energy in Dubai, said that clean energy is a fundamental pillar of sustainability and occupies the forefront in the priorities and strategic directions of the United Arab Emirates, in light of the vision and directives of the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, May God protect him, and his brother His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, stressing that the UAE is playing a leading role on the world stage and leading efforts in the field of clean and renewable energy, through major strategies and investments that support sustainable development, while enhancing production efficiency And power consumption.
His Excellency Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of energy and infrastructure, said that the UAE has future plans to diversify energy sources and shift towards clean ones, especially nuclear ones, pointing out that the operation of the Barakah peaceful nuclear power plant will push the transition towards clean energy in the country forward, which is a big and important step for energy sustainability, diversity and security for the coming decades.
On the occasion of the celebration of World Energy day, Al Mazrouei stressed that the country is following a long – term approach to planning for the future of energy and reducing emissions from it, and that the update of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 came with the aim of raising the efficiency of individual and institutional consumption by 42% – 45% compared to 2019, in addition to raising the contribution of renewable energy to 3 times by 2030, and raising the contribution of installed capacity of clean energy from the total energy mix by 2030 to (30%), in addition to achieving financial savings of up to AED 100 billion by the same year, and national investments between 150-AED 200 billion until 2030 to ensure that energy demand is met and growth in the UAE economy is sustained.
