The UAE has launched one of the largest solar stations in the world, in a new project implemented by the oil state to reduce its carbon footprint, two weeks before hosting the UN climate conference “cop28”.
While the UAE plans to increase its oil production capacity to five million barrels per day by 2027, it announced last July that it plans to triple its renewable energy production over the next seven years.
The UAE news agency “WAM” reported that the Deputy Ruler of the emirate of Abu Dhabi Hazza Bin Zayed inaugurated “Al Dhafra solar photovoltaic power plant with a production capacity of 2 gigawatts, and is the largest solar power plant in one location in the world.
The station is located in the desert, about 30 kilometers south of the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, and extends over an area of 21 square kilometers, equivalent to a fifth of the area of Paris. It will provide carbon-free energy for 160 thousand homes, according to the official website of the project.
Dubai will host the conference of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on climate “cop28” between November 30 and December 12.
