Emirates water and electricity company (EWEC) has announced the opening of registration to participate in the last quarter of 2023 auction for clean energy certificates in Abu Dhabi, which will last until December 14, 2023.
Clean energy certificates, issued by the Department of energy in Abu Dhabi, are the only approved tool in Abu Dhabi to confirm the environmental and economic benefits achieved by using clean energy, and are issued in units of 1 MW per hour.
These certificates make it possible to document that the electricity consumed by entities in Abu Dhabi comes from clean energy sources, as Emirates water and electricity company plays a key role as the sole entity responsible for registering and operating the auction for the clean energy certification scheme in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Osman Juma Al Ali, CEO of Emirates water and electricity company, said that with the upcoming cop28 Conference of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change (UNFCCC), the clean energy certification scheme contributes to emphasizing innovative solutions that can play a key role in achieving sustainability goals at the local and international levels.
He added that the internationally approved clean energy certification scheme helps enable Abu Dhabi’s operating entities to contribute to achieving the country’s clean energy goals and supporting climate neutrality goals.
It is noteworthy that the Emirates water and electricity company announced on August 17, the opening of registration for the third quarter auction of clean energy certificates, in Abu Dhabi.
The latest auction has witnessed the participation of a large group of companies so far, as the auction of clean energy certificates witnessed an unprecedented turnout from various sectors, including the utility cooling sector, artificial intelligence, and driving education, which confirms the continued growth and spread of this scheme because of its importance in enabling various industries to enhance the principle of sustainability in their main operations.
It should be noted that the clean energy certification scheme, issued by the Department of energy in Abu Dhabi, is the only approved tool in the emirate, which makes it possible to document that the electricity consumed comes from clean energy sources such as solar or nuclear energy.
In addition, clean energy certificates provide participating entities with a competitive advantage by having certificates that comply with the International Renewable Energy certification(I-REC) standards, and documenting their green credentials.
