In line with the plans to implement the Dubai strategy to reduce carbon emissions, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy announced the emirate’s roadmap to double the percentage of carbon emissions reduction to (50%) by the end of 2030, as the efforts of various entities in Dubai, as well as the council’s affiliated bodies and institutions, contributed to the reduction of net carbon dioxide emissions in Dubai as a result of projects and initiatives implemented in the emirate over the past ten years, foremost of which are advanced infrastructure in the roads and transport sector, electricity generation, water desalination, waste, industrial sector and other vital sectors with a common impact.
Abdullah Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary General of the Executive Council of Dubai, said: “Dubai is committed to cooperating with the world’s cities that are keen on sustainability and positive and impactful climate action to contribute to reducing emissions and achieving the targets of the Paris climate agreement to address the causes of global warming. With the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and chairman of the Executive Council, Dubai continues to strengthen its leadership among the world’s best cities for living, working and quality of life”.
He added: “Today’s announcement about doubling Dubai’s carbon emission reduction to 50% by 2030 translates the emirate’s full commitment to a sustainable future locally and globally, especially as this announcement coincides with Expo Dubai hosting the cop28 Conference of the parties held in the UAE.
Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, secretary general of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, said: “in line with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to increase reliance on clean and renewable energy sources and achieve carbon neutrality (zero carbon emissions) in the emirate of Dubai by 2050. The council assessed the carbon emissions for the coming years with the participation of the concerned authorities in Dubai to reach the required measures to reduce the increase in emissions and then draw a roadmap to reach the carbon neutrality goals by 2050,”he added.
He pointed out that the announcement comes in conjunction with the UAE hosting the cop 28 Conference of the parties and in line with the emirate’s trends as a leading city in achieving best practices in the fields of green development.
Mark Watts, executive director of the forty leading cities network for climate change (C40), said: “I congratulate Dubai on its commitment to contribute to the global efforts to address climate change by launching the action plan to keep temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius. The plan, the first of its kind for cities in the Middle East aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement, promises to set a goal for large-scale city and sectoral paths to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels. Dubai has managed to establish the largest solar power plant located in one location in the world, in addition to the presence of at least 75% of hybrid or electric vehicles in the city, which confirms Dubai’s global position in climate action,”he added.
