The administration of US President Joe Biden on Saturday unveiled final rules aimed at cracking down on methane emissions from the US oil and gas industry, as part of a global plan to tackle emissions that contribute to climate change.
US officials announced these rules, which took two years to prepare, during their participation in the UN climate change conference (cop28) in Dubai.
The United States and other participants at the summit are expected to provide details on ways to achieve the pledge made two years ago by 150 countries to reduce methane emissions by 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030.
Methane gas usually leaks into the atmosphere from drilling sites, gas pipelines and other oil and gas equipment without being detected.
“From day one, President Biden has restored America’s leading role as a global leader in the face of climate change, and today we have supported this commitment with strong actions,”said EPA Administrator Michael Reagan in a statement.
