Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced that his country will begin the steps to join the New BRICS Development Bank after his visit to the headquarters of that organization in the Chinese city of Shanghai.
“We are going to take the steps; I have given the order to the Minister of Finance and Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, to advance all the necessary steps and steps to modestly but significantly request our incorporation into the BRICS bank,” Maduro said during his program Con Maduro+, which he transmitted from China.
The Venezuelan president reiterated that he is hopeful that very soon Venezuela will enter the BRICS as a full member.
Venezuela participated for the first time in the XV Summit of Heads of State and Government of the BRICS, which took place in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, between August 22 and 24.
During a virtual intervention at the BRICS+ dialogue session, Maduro defended the process of global de-dollarization to overcome barriers imposed by sanctions.
Maduro also reiterated his intention to join the group and pledged to boost the bloc’s relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean.
In addition, the president invited the countries of the BRICS group to invest and produce food in that South American nation.
