Venezuela announced the release of $1.5 billion in funds held in Novo Banco accounts of Venezuelan organizations and businesses.
“The Venezuelan government wins a case and recovers its assets in Portugal. One thousand five hundred million dollars have been unblocked from Novo Banco,” Venezuelan communication and information minister Freddy Ñañez said.
The Venezuelan minister supplemented the statement with the posting of photos of the Central Civil Court of Lisbon’s judgment in Spanish.
However, confirmation has been “non-existent” in this case, except from media reporting of Freddy Ñañez’s statement.
“The cash was held in the accounts of many Venezuelan state-owned enterprises, including the Bank for Economic and Social Development (BANDES) and the state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), as well as other subsidiaries,” said
The Venezuelan opposition has already reacted to the revelation, claiming that due to US-imposed international sanctions, Venezuela would not be able to access this cash.
